The Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance (SAACA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the creation, preservation and advancement of the Arts. SAACA strengthens the bonds between people, place and purpose through collaborative, arts-driven experiences.
Southern Arizona has long served as a hub for arts and culture. Despite the deep profusion of talent, our creative community has found difficulties in making a living from their work as well as sharing it with the community. We created SAACA to address these needs by cultivating programming that puts a spotlight on our local creatives and celebrates our unique culture, while providing direct opportunities for artists to make and sell their work.

RIBBONS OF WHITE: INTERPRETATIONS TO HONOR LUNG CANCER AWARENESS
Call for Entries
Ribbons of white: Interpretations to honor Lung Cancer Awareness
Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of both men and women in the U.S.¹
Roche Tissue Diagnostics is partnering with the Southern Arizona Arts & Cultural Alliance to host an exhibition focused on the primary color of white, which corresponds with the white ribbon that showcases Lung Cancer Awareness Month each November.
The content of the art can be the choice of the artist, with the only caveat that the finished pieces be at least 50% white, to truly make a statement in honor of this important month. White can sometimes be associated with a sense of stillness/isolation (e.g., snow), mortality/transition (e.g., bone), softness (e.g., cotton or clouds), wishes (e.g., seeded dandelion), infiniteness (e.g., shell) or coolness (e.g., alabaster or marble). It can be used to enhance, emphasize or be a focal point. The color white can seem like a blank slate, symbolizing a new beginning or a fresh start. Whatever the chosen content, the prevalence of white should enhance the works’ narrative and may be expressed as representational, expressionistic, surrealistic or abstract.
With a Roche vision of doing now what patients need next, disease awareness is always top of mind. For the duration of the exhibition, the Oro Valley site will host an internal giving campaign to support the El Rio Foundation’s Cancer Fund, which helps with costs associated with diagnosis and treatment of uninsured and underinsured patients, ensuring they can get what they need to treat their disease. We’ll also invite the local community to contribute to this important cause.
Eligibility: This competition is open to artists 18 years of age or older.
Deadline for Submission: October 10, 2021

MONSOON MEMORY PROJECT
MONSOON MEMORY PROJECT
LOCATION: Tucson, AZ
Tucson Water selected local Artist Alex Jimenez as part of a program run by the US Water Alliance called the Water, Arts, and Culture Accelerator. For the past few months, the selected artists have been part of a cohort of other water utility/artist teams in Philadelphia, PA, Little Rock, AR and Madison, WI. The artists have been learning about strategies for public engagement and developing project goals and have identified early on that “Listening” was a major component of the work I would do with the public. The project seeks to develop unique sensory experiences of our desert storms and how the intensity of our storms has changed so much in a lifetime. The artist is seeking submissions to create a public audio archive that will house the auditory experience of our summer monsoons. The artist is calling on the public to help capture the sounds of the monsoons this season, with a particular interest in capturing the loud chubascos that roll into our desert and swiftly leave. These audio samples will become part of the Chubasco Channel on YouTube where the public can access the sounds of Tucson rains at any time.
