Blood Donors Save Arizona Kids Like Avari, Who Received Her 100th Transfusion in 2021
Cities: Casa Grande, Eloy, Globe, Maricopa, Sierra Vista & Tucson
While all donors of all blood types are in demand, there’s a critical need for type O – the universal blood. Since the beginning of the pandemic, hundreds of blood drives have cancelled due to school and business closures, resulting in more than 25,000 uncollected blood donations.
Blood donors save the lives of Arizona patients like 10-year-old Avari (photo left) who received her 100th blood transfusion in January. She was born with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare disease that prevents her body from producing red blood cells. She relies on the kindness of strangers to provide lifesaving blood transfusions every three weeks, a need that is expected to continue for her entire life. “Avari lives on borrowed blood,” says her mom, Anya. “Without regular blood donors, my daughter might not be here.”
People who have received a COVID-19 vaccine are eligible to give blood, provided general eligibility requirements are met.
All blood donations are tested for COVID-19 antibodies. For your blood donation appointment, visit www.vitalant.org (enter city or zip code) or call 1-877-25-VITAL (1-877-258-4825).
