The Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus presents its annual POPS CONCERT on Saturday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m. in the Catalina Foothills High School Auditorium. This special event marks the final Tucson performance under the direction of long-time Chorus Director Dr. Julian Ackerley, who will retire at the end of this season.
For 45 years, Dr. Ackerley has been a guiding force and positive influence on thousands of young men. Although he will lead the upcoming international tour to Greece in June, the Pops Concert will be his final local program. His official retirement date is June 30. The Boys Chorus Board of Directors has named Jordan Rakita as Dr. Ackerley’s successor, beginning in July.
This year’s concert also serves as the culmination of the Chorus’ 85th Anniversaryseason. Dr. Ackerley will be joined on stage by Associate Conductor Dr. Jordan M. Shomper. The program will open with the energetic number Everybody and will feature all eight Boys Chorus ensembles in a fun and diverse showcase of lighter music.
Performers range in age from 6 to 21, representing groups including the Touring Chorus, TowneSingers, Cadet Choir, Young Men’s Ensemble, Northwest Voices, Prince Voices, and Vesey Voices. A special highlight of the concert will be the appearance of the Alumni Chorus, comprised of former choristers spanning the past 85 years—many of whom are traveling from out of town to honor Dr. Ackerley’s legacy.
The concert will feature a wide variety of popular musical styles, including contemporary hits, barbershop, spirituals, and international folksongs. One lively segment will celebrate rhythm, with songs such as Rhythm of the Night, I Got Rhythm, Fascinating Rhythm, Turn the Beat Around, and Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.
A longtime fan favorite, the chorus’ signature western set will also return, complete with trick rodeo roping. The concert will conclude with a powerful grand finale featuring all current and former choristers performing Why We Sing and the group’s beloved rendition of Riders in the Sky.
