Emily Nenni’s “Movin’ Shoes” Release & Tour Dates
Emily Nenni released Movin’ Shoes today via New West Records. The 13-song set was produced by John James Tourville (of the Deslondes) and recorded and mixed by Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price, Jason Isbell) at Southern Grooves in Memphis.
Met with critical acclaim, Paste Magazine said “…Nenni is a charmer with a pedal-steel grin, Memphis soul, and Muscle Shoals groove” while Saving Country Music said “There are few more valuable assets in the arsenal of present-day country music than the voice of Emily Nenni, and how she so deftly wields it through her enveloping original songs.” Magnet Magazine said “The aptly titled Movin’ Shoes teases Nenni out of her honky-tonk comfort zone with a spry blend of Memphis Soul, Motown finesse, and Muscle Shoals grit” while Glide Magazine said “Nenni may not be a household name yet, but with a record like this, it’s only a matter of time.”
No Depression shared the “Movin’ Shoes” video alongside a feature with Nenni saying “Movin’ Shoes is liberating and fearless… Throughout the collection, Nenni unburdens herself to bring forth weightless works of heart.” The feature launches No Depression’s “Spotlight” artist coverage of Nenni for the month of May. Of the video, Nenni says, “The kind folks at Sagebrush in Austin allowed us to film ‘Movin’ Shoes’ over two days during SXSW. The concept came from the brilliant Travis Beverly, and was beautifully executed by him and the crew. I can’t express how happy I was to share the screen with the talented dancers of the Austin honky tonk scene. I write most of my songs with two-steppers in mind, and over the years I have adored playing for a full dance floor. I have so much love for the dancers!”
Movin’ Shoes eloquently and wryly blends southern soul from Memphis and Muscle Shoals with southern rock from Macon and outlaw country from Austin. In addition to some of her most incisive lyrics, the album features some of her most powerful vocal performances. These songs percolate with new sounds, like the Rhodes organ that kicks off the supremely funky title track and the Lone Star harmonica that weaves throughout her bluesy cover of Paul Simon’s “Tenderness.” Nenni cites Sly Stone and Linda Ronstadt’s Motown covers as specific influences, but the old styles sound fresh and current because her personality and charisma come through in every note. “This isn’t strictly honkytonk like my former records, even though it’s still all the same influences,” Nenni explains. “I’m just drawing from more artists and genres than I have in the past.”
Confident in its touchstones and compassionate in its insights, Nenni has made the album of her career.
Whenever Emily Nenni is onstage, she welcomes everybody to the dancefloor. The California-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter wants the honkytonk to be a place of escape, where fans can shed their troubles for a few hours and feel safe and free. Nenni has been hosting a tour of “Honky Tonk Nights” across the country, selecting the most “honky tonkin’” bands in each city to curate a special night of dancing. She’ll be doing just that in celebration of the release of Movin’ Shoes tonight at Pappy & Harriett’s in Pioneertown, CA. Nenni will also appear at The Grand Ole Opry on May 16th and the CMA Fest in Nashville, TN on June 7 prior to launching a European tour on June 25th. Please see the initial Movin’ Shoes tour dates, with many more to be announced, below.
Movin’ Shoes is available across streaming platforms, compact disc, and standard black vinyl. A limited “Pure Gold” color vinyl edition and a limited compact disc edition both signed by Emily Nenni are available at Independent Retailers & via NEW WEST RECORDS.
