Famed Cartwright cattle ranching descendant to teach children how to rope
Cave Creek Museum and Kiwanis Family Fun Day offers Thanksgiving on the Dude Ranch
Jeff Cartwright, a descendant of the renowned Cartwright Cattle Company ranching family, will make a special visit to Cave Creek Museum as part of its Kiwanis Family Fun Day “Thanksgiving on the Dude Ranch” on Sunday, November 13, 2022 from 2-4 PM.
Cartwright will attend the event and teach child guests how to rope. He will work with each guest individually until they are able to rope a dummy steer.
The Cartwright family had a 65,000-acre cattle ranch in Cave Creek, establishing its roots in 1887. For nearly 100 years, the Cartwrights pioneered the cattle ranching industry and became respected nationwide for their prize-winning cattle. In the early days, family members worked to round up wild horned bulls and heifers, many of which lived in a section of the ranch known as Lime Creek, where the rough and wild wilderness of rocks, hills and dense cacti were an additional challenge. ”What happened when families spent Thanksgiving at an Arizona dude ranch?” says Evelyn Johnson, the museum’s executive director. “Children will learn how kids enjoyed great homemade food, what games they played and tricks they learned from the ranch cowboys. They also will learn the art of horseshoes and the correct way to hang them for good luck.
Guests must register prior at cavecreekmuseum.org and be present for the event. The workshop is free thanks to the support of Kiwanis Club of Carefree.
The 52-year-old museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts of the prehistory, history, culture and legacy of the Cave Creek Mining District and the Cave Creek/Carefree foothills area through education, research and interpretive exhibits.
