Please join us for a presentation by Oracle resident Alan Biel on the fascinating life and legacy of Lavinia Steward.
There is no fee for the event, but donations are always welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
From the turn of the century until her death in 1917, Lavinia Steward was a prominent Oracle resident and benefactor.
Her interest in astronomy, unusual in the early 1900’s, led Lavinia to donate a large gift to the University of Arizona and paved the way for Arizona to become one of the preeminent locales for astronomy research and education in the world.
In honor of her interest in amateur astronomy, the presentation will conclude with a short discussion of modern astrophotography. Today’s telescopes allow even amateur astronomers to look millions of years into the past and observe the wonders of our universe.
