Next Stage Theatre Southwest Presents Venus in Fur At Arizona Rose Theatre
January 21-30, 2022
In what may be the most talked about event of the season, Next Stage Theatre Southwest presents David Ives’ Broadway smash Venus in Fur for nine performances only at the Arizona Rose Theatre in the Tucson Mall, opening Friday, January 21, 2022.
Ives’ play is spooky, sensual, sexy and altogether scintillating. Thomas, a beleaguered playwright, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of a classic German psychosexual novel called Venus in Furs. Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress also named Vanda who strangely seems to know more about the play — and Thomas himself — than does Thomas. In an audition where nothing is out of bounds, Vanda and Thomas blur the line between theater and reality, entering into a game of submission, domination and role reversal that audiences will not easily forget.
“The teeter-tottering test of wills that takes place in Venus in Fur makes even the most fraught encounter between a domineering director and a sensitive performer seem like a play date in the sandbox.” (New York Times)
This production will have an extraordinary cast equal to its sensational script. Starring as Vanda is Samantha Cormier, who has been dazzling Tucson audiences with her comedic talents at Invisible Theater and the Gaslight for years; while Thomas will be played by David Greenwood, a longstanding member Tucson’s esteemed Rogue ensemble.
Venus in Fur runs 85 minutes (no intermission). Performances begin Friday, January 21 at 7:00 pm and continue through Sunday, January 30 with evening shows and Saturday and Sunday matinees. All appropriate Covid guidelines will be followed.
Tickets are $25, with discounts for Seniors, Students and Military. For tickets and exact showtimes and dates, visit: arttickets.yapsody.com
