THE DESLONDES RETURN WITH ROLL IT OUT TOMORROW & TOUR

September 5 - November 9

The Deslondes will return with Roll It Out tomorrow via New West Records. The 13-song set was produced by Andrija Tokic & The Deslondes and was recorded at the Bombshelter in East Nashville, TN. Roll It Out is their first album with new drummer Howe Pearson (previously a touring member for Hurray for the Riff Raff) and also features guest vocals by Twain (Mat Davidson) and horn arrangements by Tuba Skinny. Met with critical acclaim, No Depression said they are “one of the most consistent bands putting out music today,” while Glide Magazine called them “…both nostalgic yet evolving,” saying “Even back to its founding, the band has stretched the definition of Americana.” Saving Country Music said the band “feel just as much like a musical institution as they do a ‘band.’ Along with 15 years of history and four albums from the New Orleans-based outfit, they have been chief collaborators both separately and together in some of the best roots music over that period.”

Roll It Out recaptures the crackling energy of their early days but also reflects the new perspective of age and maturity. The band’s John James Tourville, one of their five songwriters and multi-instrumentalists, says “It reminds me of back when we were starting out, before we were even the Deslondes—back when we were the Tumbleweeds. It’s like we’re moving forward to get to where we were.”

Long combining elements of early Stax, Sun, and Atlantic Records with the influence of a more raw, stripped-down sound gleaned off field recordings from Alan Lomax, the band also incorporate psychedelic flourishes that bring to mind the sonic experimentation of Joe Meek, Lee Hazlewood, and the Velvet Underground. Founded less as a band than as a neighborhood hang at Sam Doores’ home on Deslonde Street in New Orleans, the band devised an anything-goes philosophy that allowed them to incorporate sounds they picked up on their travels and everything they heard at home: classic country, hobo folk, crust punk, rural blues, Third Ward jazz, rockabilly, R&B, Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint, but also George Jones and The Band.

Today, Garden & Gun premiered Roll It Out in its entirety alongside a feature with the band. They call the album “… a stripped-down effort that is as warm and inviting as the first tipple from the Sazerac Bar” and say “’Hold on Liza’ and ‘Pour Another Round’ peak with sing-along choruses after pulsing guitar riffs and brass and horns. The bouncy folk of ‘I’ll Do It’ morphs into a Sticky Fingers-era rocker with a massive Keith Richards-approved descending riff, while the mournful shuffle of ‘Grand Junction’ looks back on their rough and rowdy early days with a skeptical eye. Roll It Out is the sound of a band hurtling toward a fresh start, only to find themselves back in a familiar place, wiser and with a couple more battle scars.”

“This band feels like the old family farm,” says The Deslondes’ Sam Doores. “It’s a place where we can meet for the Fourth of July, bring our families, grill some burgers, and make some music together. It’s always going to be there, and we know it’s going to work and feel good.” After more than 15 years together, four albums, and countless live shows, the five members have found new inspiration in the ties that bind them together as friends and collaborators, as something close to kin. That sense of comfort and commitment animates Roll It Out, lending it a quiet poignancy as they reflect on what it means to devote yourself to other people—whether it’s family, friends, audiences, or other guys in the tour van with you.

To that end, The Deslondes launched their touring in support of Roll It Out last night and will be in Brooklyn, NY tonight at Skinny Dennis. The tour, which will last throughout the end of the year, features a run of performances with Shannon & The Clams, and is currently scheduled to end at the Brooklyn Folk Fest in Brooklyn, NY as well.
