Tucson Black Film Club presents the Juneteenth film screening of Jasper, Texas on Sunday, June 20, 2021, 3-4:30 p.m.
Zoom: at https://arizona.zoom.us/j/6182496557
Lou Gossett, Jr and Jon Voight star in Jasper, Texas (2003), a fact-based film that explores a modern-day murder/lynching in Texas. When hitchhiker James Byrd was killed by three white supremacists in 1998, the story hit news media and became a national topic of discussion. When two of the supremacists were actually sentenced to death, it was a first for Texas. State hate law changed, musicians wrote odes to the victim, writers and poets described the incident and other references appeared all over pop culture. Sounds familiar? Join us in a discussion of the film that explores the subject. Jasper, Texas (2003) was nominated for two 2004 Image Awards, including Outstanding Actor in a TV Movie, Miniseries or Dramatic Special (Louis Gossett Jr.) by the NAACP. No charge. Sponsors include St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church and Africana Studies at the University of Arizona.
