Free Movie FAQ: How to Improve Movie Viewing

These movies are digital reprints from original 16mm film, some reels are over 90 years old. Some of the original content may be unable to be preserved. Poor sound or image quality may suffer because of age or damage to the original fim.

The movie screens are small in size in order to make it possible to stream the video. These are very large files and it would take too long for larger files to start playing.

We now offer a MPEG format for some movies to download, but the files are often 2-3 times the size of the regular files. The screen is much larger for these files.

There are some things you can do to improve the quality of the movie while you are watching.

Enlarging the Movie Screen

Streaming Video. To keep Quicktime files small enough to play seamlessly over the Internet on most computers, the movie screen is often very small to fully enjoy.

The 64kb speed has a much smaller screen, but playing loads faster. The 256kb speed for DSL and cable modem speed options have a larger screen, but requires a broadband connection. Learn more about modem speeds.

Change monitor screen size. Some computers have a feature that can enlarge or decrease the size of the monitor screen. It is often found in the "monitor" tool or menu. Set the size to 460 x 600 or as few pixels as possible to get the largest screen.

Download the movie and watch it with imaging software that enables you to adjust image and screen sizes. Learn more about downloading movies.

Improving the Sound

Some of these films have very poor sound quality and may need enhancement by imaging or recording studio software.

The maximum sound level is also limited by your computer's internal speakers and sound controls.

Attach speakers or a headset to your sound-out plug, or run a sound cable through your stereo or home theater system to improve both picture and sound. Some speakers and headset may have sound level "boosters" or "amplifiers" to enhance the sound.

How to watch movies and continue using the Internet

Some movies now offer the option to create a new "pop-up" window to watch the movies while looking at other Web pages. To find a "pop-up" movie, look for the "pop-up" link. If one is not listed, it is not available yet.

If "Pop-Up" option is available:

  1. Click the "Pop-Up Movie" link above. A new browser window appears.
  2. Adjust the new window (lower right corner) to the size of the movie screen.
  3. Place the movie window anywhere on your desktop.

The movie will start playing while you can look through other Web pages. The "Pop-Up" movie plays at 256kb for DSL and Cable modem broadband speeds.

If "Pop-Up" option not available: Have multiple windows open on your browser so you can watch movies in one window while reading Entertainment Magazine or other web pages in an other window:
