Tucson Folk Festival 2021

The Tucson Folk Festival returns for its 36th year, April 10-11, with a range of new ways to enjoy the festival, including over 75 socially-distanced performances, broadcast live from three stages, Centennial Hall at the University of Arizona, the Drive-In Stage at Park Place Mall, and the MSA Annex at Mercado San Agustin.

After cancelling the in person Festival last year because of the pandemic, the Tucson Kitchen Musicians Association adapted the program greatly for 2021 festivities. All performances will be broadcast live for free viewing online and viewers can watch the Festival at home, by car, or in person.

“Whether you’re streaming the performances from home, enjoying the drive-in, or grabbing a seat at MSA Annex, this year’s line-up is not to be missed!” said TKMA President Matt Rolland. “We’re so excited to offer the festival in a brand-new way this year, designed with the safety of our performers and audience in mind. The festival remains free to the public and is now viewable by live broadcast. We thank our community partners and sponsors for making this year’s Festival possible, especially our new title sponsors Arizona Arts and Arizona Arts Live.”

NATIONAL HEADLINERS

Grammy Award-winning folk and bluegrass artists Laurie Lewis & Nina Gerber will perform live from Berkeley, California. Their performance will be broadcast live both online and to the big screen at Park Place and MSA Annex stages on Saturday, April 10, from 8-9:15p.

For fiddler, guitarist, singer, songwriter, and Grammy-winner, Laurie Lewis, the traditions of bluegrass and folk aren’t so much tools in her hands, but burning sources of inspiration that have driven her through a 30+ year career at the forefront of American roots music. A pioneering woman in bluegrass, Laurie has paved the way for many young women today, always guided by her own love of traditional music and the styles of her heroes that came before.

Laurie is joined by the inimitable Nina Gerber on acoustic and electric guitar. After carving a career out of what some might call the shadows, guitarist Nina Gerber is at last beginning to dare the light with her latest solo record. Nina has performed and recorded with Karla Bonoff, Peter Rowan, Nanci Griffith, Greg Brown, and many others.

The Tucsonics features some of Tucson’s finest session and performing musicians including Alvin Blain (steel guitar), Lex Browning (guitar), Matt Mitchell (guitar), Nick Coventry (violin), Evan Dain (bass) and Fred Hayes (drums). Throw out the rules when Family Show Headliner Ron Pandy hits the stage! A dad with an open mind and a sense of humor, Ron gets all ages fully participating in movement and spirited music. There are just some things about being a kid that remain the same through time and he makes those memories the ingredients of his show.

“Faces of a Community” Art Exhibition

Roche Unveils Virtual “Faces of a Community” Art Exhibition
The Virtual Exhibition features original works from over 45 artists

For over a decade, Roche Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) has been investing in creativity through local, regional, national and employee art exhibitions at their dedicated gallery space, open to the public.

At their Oro Valley site the pathology customer area brings excellence and innovation to science and engineering, with individuals and teams leading the discovery, development and delivery of diagnostic systems and tissue-based cancer tests that are guiding the future of healthcare.

To affirm their commitment to creativity, RTD is hosting the “2021: Faces of a Community” art exhibition. The exhibition was inspired as a format to engage artists and their viewers with the social relevance of our time.

The past year has been an unprecedented year of challenge for all members of our community. Innovation, creativity, and commitment to community recovery have been at the heart of Roche Tissue Diagnostics’ (RTD) response.

The word “portraiture” encompasses a broad category of artwork that has the power to generate conversation, inspire compassion, and express identity in new ways. Portraits invite discussion and compassion while looking in and through the eyes of another.

Artists were invited to submit up to 5 portraits in any media. The exhibition seeks to broaden the definition of portraiture and highlight the genre’s relevance in society and art. Artworks have originated from direct encounters between the artist and the figure or draw upon existing imagery or historical figures.

The exhibition features both 2D & 3D artworks, including, but not limited to, photography, painting, watercolor, sculpture, and more.

“Looking at the virtual gallery of over 150 original artworks, I am reminded of the power of one to influence many”, shared Darlene Kryza, Philanthropy & Community Relations leader at Roche Diagnostics. “When I look at this collection I see both the vulnerability and resilience that our community has demonstrated over the last year – it’s an inspiration.”

The community can view the collection at: https://www.saaca.org/facesofacommunity.html

To learn more how Roche strengthens communities, visit their website. https://diagnostics.roche.com/global/en/article-listing/strengthening-communities.html

The RTD Gallery is currently not open to the public.

“[New West Symphony is] embracing the mission of refreshing the modern concert experience for a new generation” – Los Angeles Times

New West Symphony (NWS), with Grammy-winning conductor Michael Christie as Artistic and Music Director, continues its 2020-21 groundbreaking and reimagined season of “Global Sounds, Local Cultures” with A Tour of Iran. Exploring centuries old traditions of Iranian poetic and musical cultural influences on the western world, award-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and Iranian instrumentalists Pejman Hadadi (tombak and daf) and Masoud Rezaei (setar) join the New West Symphony on this musical voyage. Michael Christie leads the orchestra in Western classical masterworks by Handel, Rameau, Gounod, and the timeless overture to Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Iranian composers Behzad Ranjbaran, Masoud Rezaei, and Golfam Khayam share their inspiration from Iranian sites and poetry.

This festival is presented in partnership with Farhang Foundation. Established in 2008 in Los Angeles, Farhang Foundation is a nonreligious, nonpolitical, not-for-profit, member-supported foundation with a mission to celebrate and promote Iranian art and culture for the benefit of the community at large.

Along with the symphony concert, Season and Concert Passport holders can enjoy access to companion cultural festival programs for further immersion into the music, the artistry, and the culture that inspired the concert, curated by Michael Christie. These events will take place on Thursday, April 8 at 6pm PT – a Pre-Concert Talk from UCLA Senior Lecturer, David Ravetch, who explores the music presented in the A Tour of Iran concert in an informative, audience-friendly format; Friday, April 9 at 7pm PT – Culture Insights, offering insights into Southern California’s Iranian culture, demonstrations of traditional instruments & dance, and discussions about history, arts and music with distinguished guest artists; and Saturday, April 10 at 7pm PT – Meet the Artists, an online expansion of a longstanding New West Symphony tradition that breaks the barrier between the stage and audience seats featuring conversations with percussionist Pejman Hadidi, setar virtuoso Masoud Rezaei, and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke.

Christie will be available to answer questions in the live chat during each program. In addition to each initial live-streamed event, all programs (except the pre-concert talk) will be available on-demand to passport holders shortly after the initial broadcast ends. Of this festival’s programming, Christie says, “It is impossible to overstate the profundity of Greater Iran’s cultural impact on humanity over centuries. Every beautiful turn of a phrase or intricate pattern has inspired generations to experience human emotions with more depth and character. I am humbled by our guests’ depth of knowledge and their connections to one of mankind’s oldest continuous cultural lineages.”

A Tour of Iran is the fifth in a series of festivals being held October 2020 through June 2021, designed to spotlight the vivid cultural influences that have shaped classical music and Southern California itself. Each festival tradition has strong connections to symphonic music of the past and present. The season has so far included A Tour of Japan (October 2020) featuring violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, NWS concertmaster Alyssa Park, and Japanese drum ensemble Makoto Taiko; A Tour of India (November 2020) where works of Reena Esmail, Debussy, Elgar, Turina, Cooke and Philip Glass shared the spotlight with performances of Hindustani and Carnatic music; Holocaust Remembrance (January 2021), to commemorate and honor six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism voices, featuring touching historical context and music of the early 20th century and today exploring Jewish themes; and A Tour of China (February 2021), a celebration of Chinese New Year and the Spring Lantern Festival, featuring the world’s premier Pipa virtuoso and leading ambassador of Chinese music, Wu Man; multi-Grammy-winning soprano Sasha Cooke; and a master of erhu, Hong Wang. ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS 2022 TV BROADCAST SCHEDULE

The Arizona Diamondbacks and Casino Arizona, an enterprise owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), today announce a new partnership naming the popular casino and its sister property, Talking Stick Resort, as the Official Casino and Resort Partner for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The new agreement will include visible signage and exclusive VIP experiences for casino and resort guests.

“I am thrilled to welcome Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort to our family,” said D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall. “The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community has long been a valued partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and I look forward to growing our relationship with Casino Arizona, creating memorable experiences for their guests at Chase Field and impacting members of their community.”

As part of the partnership, the logos of Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort will be featured on signage throughout the ballpark, including unique field insignias in front of the home and visiting dugouts. The Arizona Diamondbacks will also open a one-of-a-kind VIP lounge behind the visiting dugout for Casino Arizona and their guests to enjoy during games. Additionally, this partnership will enhance the team’s annual Native American Inter-Tribal Baseball and Softball Tournament (Wednesday, May 25-Sunday, May 29, 2022) and Native American Recognition Day (Sunday, May 29, 2022).

This announcement builds on more than a decade of a celebrated partnership at Salt River Fields (SRF), home of the first Major League Baseball facility to be built on Native American land. Since SRF opened in 2011, the facility holds the top 9 all-time attendance records in the history of MLB Spring Training, has brought infrastructure and investment to the area and is the site for the very moving USS Arizona Memorial Gardens, located at the stadium’s Home Plate entrance.

“We are always looking for like-minded organizations with which to align our Enterprise,” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations for Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort. “Over the course of our lengthy relationship with the Arizona Diamondbacks, they have demonstrated a true commitment to their fans and the greater community. We are excited for Casino Arizona and Talking Stick Resort to grow with a partner who shares our values.”

For decades, the D-backs and the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation (Foundation) have been committed to investing in and supporting the Arizona Native American Community with over $3,000,000 in charitable contributions to the community over nearly half a century. In 1999, the Foundation established the Native American Inter-Tribal Baseball and Softball Tournament, which has made it possible for 20,000 youth and young adults as well as 1,200 Inter-Tribal teams to participate in the friendly but competitive event. Continuing their commitment to quality tournaments and fields for the community, together with the Colorado Rockies, the D-backs refurbished Lehi Field, with an additional SRPMIC field planned in the coming year.

This expanding relationship was a natural progression for both organizations who share a common focus on engaging entertainment, premium events, unmatched guest experiences and meaningful commitments to the community.

Beginning on Saturday, April 3, 2021, the Jupiter String Quartet is presented by Arizona Friends of Chamber Music in a virtual concert featuring the world premiere of Stephen Andrew Taylor’s Chaconne/Labyrinth. This performance was recorded exclusively for this online event in Smith Memorial Recital Hall at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, where the ensemble has been artists-in-residence since 2012, and where Taylor is a professor of Theory and Composition.

The program also includes Schubert’s dramatic “Death and the Maiden” String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor. The performance will be accessible for free starting on April 3 at 10am MST on Arizona Friends of Chamber Music’s website and it will be available to watch for 30 days after the initial presentation at www.arizonachambermusic.org/videos/jupiter-string-quartet.

Of his new work, Chaconne/Labyrinth, Taylor explains, “‘Chaconne’ is an old-fashioned word for a repeating chord progression, like the 12-bar blues. Here the wonderful Jupiter Quartet plays a chaconne, but at the same time they are lost in a labyrinth. The chords keep returning, only to point in new directions. This is how I’ve felt the past year: stuck in a loop, but at the same time lost in a maze, desperately seeking the way out. At the center of this maze, like the Minotaur of Greek myth, lies a depiction of the coronavirus that has so profoundly changed our world. After this encounter—marked by strange, percussive sounds—the quartet traces their way, like following Ariadne’s thread, back through the labyrinth.”

Chaconne/Labyrinth was commissioned by Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. AFCM believes that chamber music remains a living art form, and nurtures new music by commissioning works from interesting, accessible composers specifically tailored to great ensembles. The organization’s strong history of past commissions can be found at www.arizonachambermusic.org/commissions.

About the Jupiter String Quartet: The Jupiter is a particularly intimate group, consisting of violinists Nelson Lee and Meg Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel (Meg’s older sister), and cellist Daniel McDonough (Meg’s husband, Liz’s brother-in-law). Now enjoying their 19th year together, this tight-knit ensemble is firmly established as an important voice in the world of chamber music. The New Yorker writes, “The Jupiter String Quartet, an ensemble of eloquent intensity, has matured into one of the mainstays of the American chamber-music scene.”

The Jupiter has performed in some of the world’s finest halls, including New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, Boston’s Jordan Hall, Mexico City’s Palacio de Bellas Artes, Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center and Library of Congress, Austria’s Esterhazy Palace, and Seoul’s Sejong Chamber Hall. Their major music festival appearances include the Aspen Music Festival and School, Bowdoin Music Festival, Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival, Rockport Music Festival, the Banff Centre, Virginia Arts Festival, Music at Menlo, Maverick Concerts, Caramoor International Music Festival, Lanaudiere Festival, West Cork (Ireland) Chamber Music Festival, Skaneateles Festival, Madeline Island Music Festival, Yellow Barn Festival, Encore Chamber Music Festival, the inaugural Chamber Music Athens, and the Seoul Spring Festival, among others. In addition to their performing career, they have been artists-in-residence at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana since 2012, where they maintain private studios and direct the chamber music program.

Their chamber music honors and awards include the grand prizes in the Banff International String Quartet Competition and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition; the Young Concert Artists International auditions in New York City; the Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America; an Avery Fisher Career Grant; and a grant from the Fromm Foundation. From 2007-2010, they were in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Two.

The Jupiter String Quartet feels a particular connection to the core string quartet repertoire; they have presented the complete Bartok and Beethoven string quartets on numerous occasions. Also strongly committed to new music, they have commissioned works by Syd Hodkinson, Hannah Lash, Dan Visconti, Mark Adamo, Pierre Jalbert, and Kati Agócs.

The quartet’s latest album a collaborative recording with the Jasper String Quartet, was released in February 2021 on Marquis Classics. It features the world premiere of Dan Visconti’s Eternal Breath along with Osvaldo Golijov’s Last Round and Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat, Op. 20. Their recent album, Metamorphosis (Marquis Classics, 2020), includes Beethoven’s Quartet Op. 131 and Ligeti’s Quartet No. 1 “Métamorphoses nocturnes.” Other recordings on Marquis include Alchemy with Australian pianist Bernadette Harvey (2019), Shostakovich & Britten (2007), and Mendelssohn & Beethoven (2009). The quartet’s discography also includes releases on Azica Records and Deutsche Grammophon.

The Jupiters place a strong emphasis on developing relationships with future classical music audiences through educational performances in schools and other community centers. They believe that, because of the intensity of its interplay and communication, chamber music is one of the most effective ways of spreading an enthusiasm for “classical” music to new audiences. The quartet has also held numerous masterclasses for young musicians at Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, the Aspen Music Festival, Encore Chamber Festival, Madeline Island Music Festival, and Peabody Conservatory.

The quartet chose its name because Jupiter was the most prominent planet in the night sky at the time of its formation and the astrological symbol for Jupiter resembles the number four. They are also proud to list among their accomplishments in recent years the addition of seven quartet children: Pablo, Lillian, Clara, Dominic, Felix, Oliver, and Joelle. You may spot some of these miniature Jupiters in the audience or tagging along to rehearsals, along with their grandparent babysitters. For more information, visit www.jupiterquartet.com.

About Stephen Andrew Taylor: Stephen Andrew Taylor composes music that explores boundaries between art and science. His first orchestra commission, Unapproachable Light, inspired by images from the Hubble Space Telescope and the New Testament, was premiered by the American Composers Orchestra in 1996 in Carnegie Hall. Other works include the quartet Quark Shadows, commissioned by the Chicago Symphony; and Seven Memorials, a 30-minute cycle for piano inspired by the work of Maya Lin, featured at Tanglewood in 2006 with pianist Gloria Cheng. The Machine Awakes, a CD of his orchestra, chamber and electronic music, was released in 2010; and Paradises Lost, an opera based on a novella by Ursula K. Le Guin, received its Canadian premiere in 2013, conducted by the composer. In 2015 the New York Times called his piano work Variations Ascending, premiered by Ian Hobson, “persuasive and powerful.” He was a 2014-15 Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation.

Taylor also works with live electronics in pieces such as Inspiral for contraforte and 4-channel surround sound, premiered by Henry Skolnick in South Korea in 2019; and Ocean of Air (2017) for Detroit Symphony principal trombonist Kenneth Thompkins. He conducts the Illinois Modern Ensemble, and has also appeared with Sinfonia da Camera, the Nouveau Classical Project, and the Arizona Chamber Music Festival. As a theorist, he writes and lectures on African music, data sonification, György Ligeti, Björk and Radiohead. In popular music he has collaborated on concerts and albums with the band Pink Martini, rock singer Storm Large, and cabaret/performance artist Meow Meow.

Born in 1965, he grew up in Illinois and studied at Northwestern and Cornell Universities, and the California Institute of the Arts. His music has won awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Howard Foundation, the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Conservatoire Américain de Fontainebleau, Composers, Inc., the Debussy Trio, the College Band Directors National Association, the New York State Federation of Music Clubs, the Illinois Arts Council, the American Music Center, and ASCAP. Among his commissions are works for Northwestern University, University of Illinois, the Syracuse Society for New Music, the Jupiter Quartet, the Spoleto Festival, Pink Martini and the Oregon Symphony, the Quad City Symphony, the Chicago Symphony, Quartet New Generation, Piano Spheres, and the American Composers Orchestra. Taylor is Professor of Music at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where he lives with his spouse, artist Hua Nian. For more information, visit www.stephenandrewtaylor.net.

CHRIS ST JOHN RELEASES THE ALBUM I’M DREAMING

March 23, 2021 (New York, NY) — Over the last quarter century, Long Island Singer/Songwriter Chris St. John has truly led a diverse and successful professional career in the field of law as a prosecutor, judge and practicing attorney.

LISTEN TO I’M DREAMING ON SPOTIFY HERE

Now, his dream of lateral success in the music business is starting to become a reality, as his LP, I’m Dreaming, is now available on www.chrisstjohn.com, Soundcloud and all the major services. His instantly satisfying first single from the record “I Called You Rose”, hit Number #3 on the Euro Indie Music Charts and #8 on the World Indie Music Charts – with a second tune “I’d Send You My Heart” – hitting the airwaves now.

The album includes 13 original songs plus a cover of Peggy O’ and a musical score that connects two compositions.

The topics include the loss of love at a young age; the loss of his parents; the birth of his son John (now 18) and life with his wife of 27 years Elisabeth; a surprise DNA discovery; a serious illness where he was put in a medically induced coma, and a nurse sang him back to life; the loss of a young relative in a car accident and the subsequent climb out of depression; alcohol addiction and recovery; and a gift from his grandmother that he intends to return to her someday.

My professional career is what I do. These songs are who I am. They are about my personal life. The songs have been written over about 30 years, with four new ones written in the last several months to finish up the album,” he added.

Chris also worked in the State Department, participating in the Reagan-Gorbachev Summit in 1987; and lived, studied, and taught in China later that year. He was also a Congressional Aide and is now a volunteer firefighter.

In 2015, he and his friend started a not-for-profit charity called HALO Missions, which provides medical care, clothing, food, farming equipment, and surgeries for AIDS orphans and the extreme poor throughout Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean.

St John remarked, The title of the LP is ‘I’m Dreaming’ because some of these songs were dreamed in my sleep and written down when I awoke. Others came from daydreams.  There are so many references to dreaming in the album. I guess I like to dream. People have told me I should write a book or make an album. This is both to me”.

Blood Donors Drive

Blood Donors Save Arizona Kids Like Avari, Who Received Her 100th Transfusion in 2021
Cities: Casa Grande, Eloy, Globe, Maricopa, Sierra Vista & Tucson

While all donors of all blood types are in demand, there’s a critical need for type O – the universal blood. Since the beginning of the pandemic, hundreds of blood drives have cancelled due to school and business closures, resulting in more than 25,000 uncollected blood donations.

Blood donors save the lives of Arizona patients like 10-year-old Avari (photo left) who received her 100th blood transfusion in January. She was born with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare disease that prevents her body from producing red blood cells. She relies on the kindness of strangers to provide lifesaving blood transfusions every three weeks, a need that is expected to continue for her entire life. “Avari lives on borrowed blood,” says her mom, Anya. “Without regular blood donors, my daughter might not be here.”

People who have received a COVID-19 vaccine are eligible to give blood, provided general eligibility requirements are met.
All blood donations are tested for COVID-19 antibodies. For your blood donation appointment, visit www.vitalant.org (enter city or zip code) or call 1-877-25-VITAL (1-877-258-4825).
