Huntington Beach’s famous 4th of July Home/Business Decorating Contest and Neighborhood Car Parade will culminate July 4th weekend. These two activities aim to bring the community together in order to celebrate our nation’s independence in a wholesome, family-friendly fashion.
The decorating contest invites residents and business owners within the Huntington Beach City limits to decorate their properties in genial competition with their peers. Registration to participate is open through June 28, and requires one to three photos of the decorated home or business. Last year, 38 groups decorated their homes and businesses.
For home entries, all photos must display exterior decorations visible to the street during daytime hours from July 1st-4th. Business entries’ exterior decorations must be visible to the public during their normal business hours from July 1st-4th. All entries will receive a yard sign with their entry number that must be displayed during the voting days.
The public may view all participants’ photos on HB 4th of July social media channels and at www.hb4thofjuly.org. The public may view these photos and vote from 9:00AM June 28 to midnight July 2. The City will announce the two winners July 3rd at 10am on HB 4th of July social media channels and website. The home winner receives a surfboard-shaped award and a Traeger grill from Home Depot; the second-prize winner gets ten Kobe steaks barbecued at your home in person by Calvin Free from the Beef Palace; the top storefront wins a cash prize. Brands may also promote themselves during this event. Sponsors’ logos will appear on this award, HB 4th of July social media, website and voting poll site. Current sponsors include; Sherwin Williams; Beef Palace; Home Depot; Jacks; Chick-Fil-A; Tiodize; WMLS; The Longboard Restaurant; and Jan’s Health Bar.
Residents will not only decorate homes, but also cars! Starting early at 8:00 AM July 4th, watch some of the coolest cars in town along three routes–from decorated contemporary models to specialty brands to classics to things that aren’t cars at all: floats, trucks and military vehicles from the future. Beloved Disney movie cars include Lightning McQueen, The Pizza Planet delivery truck, and Herbie the Love Bug; other movie cars include the JURASSIC PARK Jeeps and Ectomobile from GHOSTBUSTERS. Some of the vehicles will provide live entertainment on the go; most all will transport civic and community guests of honor.
In a first, the parade will include a military vehicle from the future: a transport from the Amazon Original, The Tomorrow War carrying a dangerous, active, aggressive cargo as it wends through the streets of peaceful Huntington Beach.
In The Tomorrow War, the world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: Thirty years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Chris Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.
The live cargo transport vehicle will join two Humvee support vehicles in a themed area at the Pier Plaza Festival. The truck will leave its post to take an interactive alien tentacle along for the ride in the car parade before returning to Pier Plaza.
A partial list of parade vehicles and guests of honor includes (vehicles TBD unless noted):
*A symbol of the Marina High School “Vikings”, the Marina High School Viking Boat is an entirely authentic Viking ship built by high school students in the Marina high school wood shop over a period of two years. She is named Valhalla after the mythical Viking resting place and she is fully seaworthy. Wood-shop teacher Bob Meade guided more than 50 students as assembled the ship following 1200 year-old drawings.
